“Key To The Phoenix Heart” (iQIYI)
While hyped as a historical mystery drama, “Key To The Phoenix Heart” (aka “Sparrow Bone”) focuses on an arranged marriage drama back-dropped with layers of political intrigue to unravel. Starring Hou Minghao (previously seen in “Love In the Clouds”) and Ai Mi (previously seen in “The Double”), they make up an adorable and hilarious duo paired together for a sudden political marriage, where the blood-thirsty and revenge-filled hero finds himself helplessly falling in love with a woman who loves his best friend. Unrequited romance has never been so softly and delicately portrayed.
Fast-paced and dancing around darker themes with soft charm and light comedy makes “Key To the Phoenix Heart” a fun to watch series. Plus, every scene with Hou Minghao and Ai Mi is pure comedic gold. They play off each other fabulously and their warm comradery infuses their characters throughout. Whether their characters can find a way to fully trust and appreciate each other remains to be seen. But for now, their “hidden hearts” seem to yearn slowly towards each other. It is a cautious dance of earned trust that could lead to a long, lasting and enduring love.
Sprinkled lightly throughout, the battle sequences and fight scenes are a glorious spectacle to behold with such precision fight choreography. Hou Minghao’s physical stunts, expert handling of wire-work, and working so closely to actual flames (while in character) reveals how expertly he moves within real world heightened activities and blends it seamlessly into his performance. (He also sang several of the OST songs for the show, which is another level of sheer vocal artistry that leaves one a bit awestruck.)
It was also a nice surprise seeing how female-focused the series is written with lots of well-fleshed out female characters. “Key To The Phoenix Heart” definitely leans heavily into the themes of women empowerment — allowing women to choose their destiny, who they wish to marry and what career path they want to pursue. Upon first glance, a hero with two wives marrying a third seems counterintuitive to this theme, but as quickly explained in the series, the hero just keeps rescuing discarded women and marries them in order to provide for them and protect them, while fully respecting their autonomy and agency.

“The First Jasmine” (Viki)
Described as a historical family drama about a wheelchair-bound man who weds a sunny wife determined to make sure he walks again, that description hides the darker and more in depth issues at play. As I like to describe it: “The First Jasmine” (aka “Mo Li”) is about a wife who has a kill-list and imaginary friend, and a husband who has a secret mission and a few wild suspicions about his new wife. What could have been a much darker and murkier show about a disabled man and his mentally-ill wife, in “The First Jasmine” the story is told with deft and delicate humor and love.
Using a lens of political payback and revenge to filter the inner turmoil and emotional anguish of the husband and wife who have to find a way to communicate, love and work together is extremely well-handled and the end result is a much sweeter and softer and funnier story of love conquering all.
Expertly cast and portrayed by Bai Lu and Cheng Lei, their characters sparkle with wit and charm. Their scenes are truly the beating heart of the series and carry all the other characters along with them. You find yourself rooting for them, cheering for them and wanting to spend a lot more time in their cozy home as their characters learn to love and embrace life to its fullest. Bai Lu and Cheng Lei are inspired casting choices and perfectly portray the needed nuances and inner light that will spark a lethal retribution when provoked. Watching them reveal layer after layer of their characters was awe-inspiring to watch.
Also adding to the series high charm level is co-star Lin MuRan, who manages to steal every scene he is in. His character adds a lot of light comedy and layers of longing that comes across sweetly deferential. Last seen in “Pursuit of Jade” as a villain, Lin MuRan is due for a starring role soon.

“A Splendid Match” (Viki)
For those craving a bit of Regency Romance, “A Splendid Match” is a delight. Heavily focused on a young woman in search of a husband of good fortune and the right pedigree, the show navigates the thorny path of young love and a woman swept up in search of a life-partner who can give her the freedom and autonomy that she craves. Family and duty-focused, it takes a very clever young woman to plan carefully for her future and avoid the pitfalls of political suitors and ambitious, greedy young men who only see her as a trophy to be won.
What makes the series so tantalizing is the slow-burn chemistry between Ci Sha and Ren Min in their roles. Perhaps due to the fact that Ci Sha and Ren Min had previously worked on two prior series together (“The Longest Promise” and “The Rise of Ning”), their scenes together felt remarkably comfortable and sensual. Any Jane Austen fan would be tickled at their lively banter and mischievous side glances every time their characters would interact.
It was a fun surprise to also learn that the age gap between Ren Min and Ci Sha is only 3 years ago, when their characters are supposed to be closer to 15 years apart, and they made you believe there was indeed a large age gap between them. Regardless of any age differences or lack thereof, as a viewer, they are highly entertaining on screen together.
Co-Star WinWin (Kpop idol from the group NCT) also provided a strong and noteworthy performance. Cast as the terminally ill distant relative who pursues his unrequited love tenaciously throughout the series, as a viewer, he makes a strong case as to why he should win the girl. (No pun intended!) His natural charisma just made him so appealing and engaging to watch.
“A Splendid Match” features a thorough examination of issues of women’s choices in a time when they were supposed to seen, but never heard. Watching a young woman being pursued as if she were on an auction block and how she schemes to avoid marrying the wrong suitor is in turns exhausting and exhilarating. She truly is not a woman to be trifled with and every man should be wary of her wrath.

“Pursuit of Jade” (Netflix)
Currently one of the highest fan-ranked Cdramas, it is easy to see why: the magical snow-globe world of “Pursuit of Jade” is incredibly inviting. One immediately understands why a wounded general is so quick to volunteer to marry into this magical, tranquil world with a ready-made family. Starring Tian XiWei and Zhang LingHe, as the butcher girl and the wounded general, their chemistry is adorable and aspiring. Who wouldn’t want to literally trip across a handsome stranger, carry him home and marry him? It’s a fairytale and when that perfect snow-globe world shatters around them, you feel every bit of their anguish and agony that then turns into a furious quest for vengeance and retribution.
“Pursuit of Jade” is also an anthem of female empowerment. That small butcher girl is anything but in need of rescuing. In fact, she is frequently the rescuer. She is the “jade” — the person embodying integrity, virtue and moral character. Tian XiWei is phenomenally cast and portrays her character so fully, it is impossible to see the underlying actress. Plus, her character Fan Changyu is not just a woman of professional butcher skills and martial arts abilities, she is a maternal protector who provides for her young sister and takes in a man of unknown origin to save his life when he has no money and is in need of critical and expensive medical care. Changyu’s instinct to save lives, protect lives, and provide as much food, medicine and comfort to those around her — including strangers — is a brilliantly shining example of humanity and womanhood. There is a reason that everyone instinctively trusts her and relies upon her. Her innate goodness draws people to her and the fact that she cherishes each of them in turn, makes those around her strive to match her level of goodness and empathy. She makes people want to be better, to do better and to do more for others. It is a tough character to embody and radiate that love and goodness so fully. Also impressive is Tian XiWei’s physicality in a role where she looks delicate and small, but also as resilient and strong as steel. Truly, Tian XiWei’s performance is awesome to behold.
Zhang LingHe also delivers a knock-out performance portraying the duality of the seemingly docile matrilocal husband versus his alter-ego as the ruthless military general. He sells how quickly and easily his character falls under the spell of this snow-globe world of goodness, love and family and how fast he will strike back at anyone and anything that threatens it and those he loves. Zhang LingHe also served such charismatic charm that it was easy to fall in love with his character as fast as Changyu did in the show. He also brought a deft level of comedy to such a serious role. He did not just deliver a performance of a “knight in shining armor” determined to rescue the girl, he understood that sometimes Changyu would be rescuing his character and he went with it with grace and humor.
For two characters that matched each other’s intense protective instincts, love and trust is difficult, but they never wavered in selflessly protecting without hesitation. Everyone knows the famous ode of how love is kind, love is patient, love is enduring, love is selfless, love is unconditional. But what carves its place in the heart faster than when love is protective. When one is wiling to literally put their own body on the line for another, that is the truest form of love.
“Pursuit of Jade” remembered that the core of its story was about learning to love and letting yourself love in turn — for without love, what was all the fighting for? It was the very reason that these characters found each other and fought for each other. It is the same reason that fans across the globe felt that connection and love and embrace it so wholeheartedly.

“How Dare You?!” (iQIYI)
When a woman from the real world finds herself pulled into a fictional world of an online novel where she meets another person from the real world, also trapped there, their shared adventure becomes an immersive concoction of comedy set a midst thorny political schemes. Starring Wang ChuRan and Cheng Lei, their characters are delightful in every way as their characters feel larger than life and highly relatable: who wouldn’t take on an alter persona if given the chance in a fictional world? And what would be the constraints if you knew where the story was going and where the characters would ultimately end up? After all, choosing to fight for a better storyline and advantageous teammate in the heightened-stakes of the fictional world makes perfect sense.
“How Dare You?!” is intended to be both wish-fullment and thought-provoking as it poses questions that make you assess what is truly important when you find yourself in a reality that is predetermined and you want to change that pre-written script. Wang ChuRan’s character decides that using her foreknowlege to improve her character’s chance of survival and success — and to create the utopian world that she desires is appealing and worth rooting for. That she is able to quickly identify a fellow traveler in her mysterious journey and put their shared goals and values to quick use makes for a fun romp and fast-paced story as they race to outsmart the scripted characters and the story pre-written to keep them from achieving their dream ending.
From the outset, it is easy to see the warm interaction and fun that both Wang ChuRan and Cheng Lei were having with their portrayals and working together on this project. They made such a vivid, vivacious and outrageous fictional world feel like a zany adventure. They also brought a layer of impishness to their characters that was such a delicious seasoning that made their scenes together feel more tantalizing.

“Love Has Fireworks” (Viki)
For a show that should have been released in 2023 (delayed for legal reasons resulting in one of the characters having his face swapped out), “Love Has Fireworks” feels slightly a step out-of-time with current releases. Yet, it also feels incredibly timely as it is released just after the success of Wang ChuRan’s current series “How Dare You?!” and her 2024 series “Are You the One?” and before her upcoming hotly anticipated series “Overdo” (releasing this month).
Similarly, her co-star Tan JianCi also appeared in the massively successful two season 2023 “Lost You Forever” and went on to appear in both the 2025 series “Filter” and a second season of “Under the Skin” in 2024, and is starring in upcoming series “Dancing With the Tide”.
Ultimately, for both Wang ChuRan and Tan JianCi, the loss of momentum because of the 3 year delay in releasing “Love Has Fireworks” ended up not being much of an issue given the success their other series. It also serves as a strong re-introduction for older fans and to entice new fans into anticipating their newer series coming out this year.
“Love Has Fireworks” serves well as a bridge on both levels. Plus, it is comedic gold whenever they are on-screen together. One of the criticisms of the series is that it sparkles when they are on-screen, but lags when they are not. In spite of this, Wwang ChuRan and Tan JianCi’s characters’ casual and light breezy banter makes it worthwhile and a lot of fun to watch.
As a whole, “Love Has Fireworks” serves well as a self-empowerment guide for young adults who find themselves encountering loss of job and loss of long term relationships, while navigating job searches and carving out the career you want, and weighing the pros and cons of relationships balanced against career path goals. So it does feel a bit like a “how to” series, but looking beyond that, it truly shines in its strong comedy and chemistry between Wang ChuRan and Tan JianCi, who brought their characters to life in a way that you wanted to spend more time with them, even after the series ended.

“Unveil: Jadewind” aka: “Strange Cases of the Tang Palace” (Netflix)
In what could have been a more procedural type of series, “Unveil: Jadewind” manages to embed its mini-cases into an overarching storyline of well-plotted revenge. Starring Bai Lu as the central character who investigates particularly gruesome cases, the series serves to both provide a heightened sense of tension with immediate dire consequences as the cases unravel and cornered culprits attack out of the shadows. Co-starring Wang XingYue as special aide who assists in the investigations, there is a bit of a Sherlock Holmes-Dr. Watson kind of relationship at play.
For fans of both Bai Lu and Wang XingYue, “Unveil: Jadewind” offers a fun reunion between the two actors who had previously worked together in two prior drama projects “Story of Kunning Palace” and “One and Only”, where his prior characters never seemed to have success in trying to win Bai Lu’s character’s hearts. So fans who have followed their co-star journey in the prior two dramas were finally rewarded with a love connection in “Unveil: Jadewind.” (I confess that I did watch their earlier series to fully appreciate the star-crossed journey woven through their casting in these three dramas and it made me feel more invested in their characters by their third on-screen pairing.)
Assessing “Unveil: Jadewind” it is a stellar and thrilling — and albeit a bit chilling — in each of its mysteries. It grabs attention right away and keeps viewers wondering how each mystery within a mystery will play out. Death is constantly hovering and that heightened stakes felt palpable.
Additionally, Bai Lu delivered another A-game performance that keeps you rooting for her character and makes you feel what she feels. Wang XingYue also understood that his character and performance were there to complement and serve as both a romantic interest and foil. It created an interesting dual layer and kept their interactions on screen at a level that invests viewers thoroughly.
That said, “Unveil: Jadewind” is very pro-women empowerment and showcases how when women are treated equally, society and relationships thrive.

“Loving Strangers” (Viki)
“Loving Strangers” is a remake of the popular and award-winging 2018 Korean drama series “My Mister” (which starred IU and Lee Sun-kyun). It makes a few setting changes, such as changing the work environment from a structural engineering firm to a pharmaceutical company, but otherwise is a close adaptation. That does not change the pivotal storyline of corporate espionage that backdrops the characters struggling to escape the quicksand of their constrained lives.
On its own “Loving Strangers” is incredibly strong in writing, production and casting. Key to the show’s success are the nuanced and heart-felt performances by co-stars Zhang Zi Feng and Mark Chao, as their characters are the beating heart of the series. Fortunately, they deliver and the complicated and layered relationship between their characters keeps viewers fully invested. Their characters imbue such curiosity interwoven with a burning need to be something more — to look beyond their seemingly dead-end lives that imprison them and grasp that one beacon of light that they see in each other. That helpless and tenacious refusal to give up really gives the series its heart.
The series also has the delicate task of pairing a very young twenty-something female with an older male counterpart and showing how those characters found common ground and sympathy for each other. The “mirroring effect” is what draws them to each other and they made it believable. Zhang Zi Feng and Mark Chao created those “mirrors” for their characters and pull viewers into their unusual relationship of pain and finding solace together.

“Love Between Lines” (Viki)
At first glance, “Love Between Lines” seems like a simple story of a woman who meets a man in a role playing game, only to discovery that they have become coincidentally entangled in landlord-tenant and boss-employee relationships — both which have to be carefully balanced and hidden. This crazy concept should not work as well as it does, but thanks to expert writing and stellar performances by co-stars Lu YuXiao and Chen XingXu, the series is highly entertaining to watch. At times, it feels like three shows in one, but it surprisingly works.
Lu YuXiao fresh off her astounding performance in the fantasy drama series “Love In the Clouds” (which made my Top 10 list for 2025) brings another charming and vivacious character to screen in “Love Between Lines”. Lu YuXiao is quickly becoming a favorite with her ability to deliver effortless performances as her characters feel natural and have pitch-perfect chemistry with her male co-stars. (I also loved her scene-stealing performances in “My Journey To You”, “Perfect Match,” “Blossoms In Adversity” and “The Longest Promise”.)
In “Love Between Lines”, Lu YuXiao manages to deliver a character that just feels so real and rich in texture. She is someone who you could see in your life in the real world and would happily embrace if she did. The secret to any great character is to “make it real” and she seems to have perfected that craft on screen.
Matching her effervescent personality and portrayal, co-star Chen XingXu is awesome as his character interacts with Lu YuXiao in every setting they encounter. They are engaging and entertaining and so delightfully paired. They brought an energy and boisterousness that made their characters attraction and curiosity feel inviting and natural. That welcoming invitation was impossible to resist.

“Glory” aka “Jade Tea Bone” (iQIYI)
In a so-called “reverse harem” plot, “Glory” is about a matriarchal tea plantation run entirely by women where men are employed, but only married for the purpose of offspring and then cast out. It is intended to be both aspirational and farcical at the same time. From start to finish, “Glory” is an unabashed female-focused and female-empowerment anthem.
What makes it so unusual is by casting co-stars Gulnezer Bextiyar and Hou Minghao (previously seen in “Love in the Clouds” and the currently airing “Key To the Phoenix Heart”), the series sets it up so that the viewer is not sure who to root for in the tug-of-war for control — each of their characters is seeking justice and equality — but is unwilling to bow down to the control of the other.
Thus, “Glory” invites viewers to follow the star-crossed love story of a renegade judicial officer who loses his memory and falls in love with a tea plantation owner who is hosting a courtship competition to determine who will win the right to be her husband and live in the women-only compound. Both their characters are ruthless schemers that will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Yet their love story has an irresistible allure — it is seductive and compelling and oh so delectable to watch them try to resist the others’ charms.
Watching the series expose all the devious methods and ulterior motives of the men participating in the matrilocal husband-competition is hilarious. Watching Gulnezer Bextiyar and Hou Minghao’ characters fight their attraction and their own duplicitous natures is awesome to behold as well. Such clever writing and character portrayals makes “Glory” as must-watch series.
